Muslim Aid Appeal for $2 Million for Cyclone Nargis Crisis Print E-mail
Muslim Aid is responding to the current crisis in Myanmar (also known as Burma) after the devastating Cyclone Nargis hit the country this Saturday 4th May. Experts fear that the massive storm surge that swept into the vast Irrawaddy delta, southwest of Rangoon, has killed up to 100,000, with thousands more missing and millions left homeless.

The storm gathered momentum in the Bay of Bengal for several days and resulted in a wave that reached approximately 12 feet (3.5 metres) high, sweeping away low lying villages, leaving villagers with nowhere to find shelter.

According to Reuters sources, the government has called for international assistance as food and clean water supplies are running low. Emergency aid is slowly reaching the country, however, the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs reports that shelter material, water purification tablets, cooking sets, mosquito nets, emergency health kits and food are still desparately needed.

The World Food Programme has 3,800 tons of food in the country. Thirty tons of rice were distributed on Wednesday and flights carrying relief supplies have now landed .

Muslim Aid need your help to raise $2 million worth of funds to help the thousands of surviors left homeless by the disaster. $200,000 has already been allocated. We will be working with our partners Global Medic providing clean water, medicine and emergency healthcare.

We will also be providing food and non food items.

3,000 people have already been helped and with arrival of new equipment, we will be able to help many more .

We are in continuous contact with our team on the ground and local partners.
