MUSLIM AID READY FOR ACTION AFTER CYCLONE NARGIS
Media > Press Releases
10/05/2008
“Cyclone Nargis has had a huge impact on the lives of millions of people. The death toll is increasing and people are in desperate need of food and water. Muslim Aid is doing everything it can to reduce the suffering of the people” said Anamul Haque, Head of Emergency Programmes.
International Relief and Development Agency Muslim Aid is responding to
the current crisis in Myanmar (also known as Burma) after the
devastating Cyclone Nargis hit the country this Saturday 4th May. The
death toll has risen to over 22,500 with a further 41,000 missing,
resulting from a massive storm surge that swept into the vast Irrawaddy
delta, southwest of Rangoon.
According to Reuters sources, the government has called for
international assistance as food and clean water supplies are running
low. Prices of fuel and construction materials have also risen
dramatically in the wake of the storm.
Muslim Aid is appealing for $2 million worth of funds to help the
thousands of survivors left homeless by the disaster. $200,000 has
already been allocated as Muslim Aid prepares its relief work on the
ground.
Muslim Aid has a strong presence around Myanmar in countries such as
Bangladesh, Indonesia and Sri Lanka with fully trained and equipped
teams ready to travel to Myanmar once access to the country is
permitted. We will be working with our partners Global Medic providing
clean water, medicine and emergency healthcare.
The organisation is currently speaking to partners, such as Christian
Aid and Oxfam about how best to deliver aid on the ground. Muslim Aid
are in constant contact with the Myanmar authorities about access to
the country and obtaining clearance for medicines, water purification
equipment and inflatable field hospitals. Telephone lines, power
supplies and infrastructure have been severely damaged making
communication with those on the ground extremely difficult.
Muslim Aid is a humanitarian aid organisation which works in over 70
countries across Africa, Asia and Europe, providing emergency relief
and long term development projects. It strives to help the poor
overcome the suffering endured due to natural disasters and lack of
life's basic necessities.
Its mission is to tackle poverty by developing innovative and
sustainable solutions enabling people and their communities to live in
dignity and independence regardless of gender, race and religion.
