Sri Lanka - Over 250,000 Internally Displaced

Muslim Aid needs YOU to raise £200,000 for the people of Sri Lanka.

Since February 2008, fighting between the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (the LTTE, also known as the Tamil Tigers) and the Sri Lankan government reached a climax leaving 250,000 people stranded in refugee camps as they attempted to flee the fighting.

The 26-year old insurgency which has killed over 70,000 people and injured thousands more, has uprooted communities from their homes and forced them to take refuge in the more densely populated areas of Vavunia, Jaffna and Trincomalee that are unable to cope with the huge influx of internally displaced people (IDPs).

In Vavunia, 53,000 people arrived since Sunday May 3rd 2009; the overwhelming numbers of injured and malnourished putting pressure on hospitals and medical facilities due to poor infrastructure and inadequate resources.

In the camps, thousands are without access to clean water and adequate sanitation facilities increasing the threat of illness from waterborne diseases. Children, who make up about 30% of the displaced population, are especially at risk from chicken pox, ring worms and diarrhea due to dehydration and contaminated water supplies.

Local and international NGOs are working together to deliver emergency relief. Food, clean water and medical supplies are still desperately needed as more displaced persons arrive in the camps every day.

Pakistan Crisis-Humanitarian Crisis set to worsen

Over 2 million people have been displaced since fighting flared in northern Pakistan last month. Billed as the largest displacement crisis in Pakistan's history, the United Nations says about 48 percent of the displaced are children.

  • Added to over 550,000 refugees from earlier fighting, the crisis threatens to be the largest man-made humanitarian disaster in Pakistan's post-independence history.

But with the conflict zone itself having become a no-go area for relief agencies, Muslim Aid is concentrating on providing essential life support to those in the refugee camps.  Shelter, food, utensils, clean water and medical supplies are urgently needed.

So far Muslim Aid has provided:

  • 250- tents for internally displaced families that can accommodate a family of 6/7 benefiting up to 3,000 people.
  •  Non food items to 1,000 families such as utensils, clothes, jerry cans and blankets.
  • 800 mattresses and 500 kitchen sets have already been distributed.
  • An emergency medical tent where a 1,000 patients will be treated with basic medical supplies.
  •  400 ration packs pack comprising of 5 kg Ghee, 5 kg Rice, 2 kg Pulses and 20 kg Flour.
  • An emergency medical tent where a 1,000 patients will be treated with basic medical supplies.

Bangladesh Cyclone death toll mounts to 200

Cyclone Aila, the latest in the line of natural disasters to hit South-East Asia, tore through parts of coastal Bangladesh and South eastern India on May 25th, killing over 200 people and leaving 500,000 people homless. Persistent heavy rain has triggered further landslides and burst mud embankments, threatening to increase the death toll.

Muslim Aid emergency teams were on the ground well before the cyclone hit, evacuating people and moving them to secure cyclone shelters. Needs assessment will be carried out in Satkhira, Bagerhat, Patuakhali, Barguna and Pirojour, while emergency teams have already reached the worst hit areas with  water purification units and 500,000 water purification tablets. Muslim Aid teams are also distributing food parcels to people in remote areas.

Head of Emergency Programmes at Muslim Aid, Anamul Haque said, “The priority now is getting clean water to the survivors of the storm, as hundreds of water sources and wells have been contaminated. Funds are urgently needed to provide emergency relief so we can continue to provide help wherever needed”.
